Backup Your MSN Group Data Before it's Lost!'By now, we've all seen the following message: Important Announcement
The MSN Groups service will close in February 2009. You can move your group to
Multiply, MSN's partner for online groups. Learn More
This warning doesn't indicate the exact day the shutdown will occur but I have seen reference to the 21st in some communications. If that date is correct, we have only -524 days left! NOTE: I will continue to honor and process requests as long as MSN Groups site remains accessible. If you made the move to Multiply and are pleased with the outcome, great. I and many others were not. Multiply uses a blog-type format and not that of the forums we've grown accustomed to. The MSN Groups service will soon shutdown and unless we take immediate action, our forum data will be forever lost. I've developed software that will export all textual forum content to a tab-delimited file. This file contains all group content including the board, topic, post, user, and date/time. This file can be read by Excel, Open Office, or MS Access. It can also be used to import your group data into any other software that supports import-from-file. I'm performing the export as a service. I charge a one-time fee of $10US for groups containing fewer than 20,000 posts and $20 for those with more. The file can be freely distributed amongst group subscribers or used in any way you see fit. I've also written an import utility for phpBB3 that is made available free of charge. It has been used to successfully migrate several groups from MSN Groups to phpBB3 forums using these tab-separated export files. |
